Opera Launch Toga Party!

posted 18 Apr 2013 12:23 by Charlie Lockwood

What better way to celebrate the launch of this year's Greek-tragedy inspired Summer Festival Opera than with a TOGA PARTY!

A great opportunity to have a catch up and forget about all that exam and deadline stress before knuckling down for the term, on Tuesday 23rd April we will be donning our sheets and heading to The Proverbial on the Harborne High Street from 9pm. While it is a great opportunity to get to know the committee, cast and crew (and you never know, we might just let you know exactly how to pronounce the opera's name!) all are welcome!

At only £2 (collected on the door) there's really no excuse not to come and have some fun - all proceeds go to funding the opera.

Opera Auditions

This year as part of the Summer Festival, we will be performing Gluck’s Iphigenie en Aulide as our opera. This opera has an exciting plot and the music has attracted composers like Richard Wagner to stage the opera. There are a wide variety of parts and we need a huge chorus so everyone will have the chance to get involved.

Auditions will be held on Saturday 9th March from 1-8 in the Dome. In your 10 minute audition you will just be required to sing one of the provided extracts - don’t worry, you won’t have to say the name of the opera! Please sign up for an audition slot in the music office and you can collect the extracts from there as well.

If you don’t sing you can still be involved. We will obviously be in need of an orchestra, therefore if you would like to play in the orchestra then please sign up on the Sinfonia sign up sheet and then we will select the players from there.

We have a great opera team this year and it is going to be an exciting project to be involved in. An opportunity to be in an opera is one that you cannot afford to miss.

Summer Festival 2013

posted 7 Feb 2013 10:45 by Charlie Lockwood

If you like summer and festivals and music, you'll love the Summer Festival of Music!

The festival is organised by students of the University to create music-making opportunities after the busy exam period and allow students to use and develop skills gained throughout the academic year, whilst having fun along the way! The emphasis is on student involvement with a variety of concerts showcasing the wide-ranging talents and tastes of musicians at the University. From the conductors and composers to the many students who make up the ensembles, there are plenty of ways to get involved.
